History Gone Wilder | Have History Will Travel's video: The Secret History of Meat
@The Secret History of Meat
There's a McDonald's in every town sometimes multiple franchises in a single town. How did we get to where hamburgers and beef are the most consumed meat by people in the United States? In this dive into history, I will look into the secret history of meat and explain how the beloved pork got overshadowed by the beef by the mid-twentieth century.
For centuries before the late 1800s, pork was the main meat eaten by people. Cows were not used for beef very often, their milk was far more valuable because it makes cheese, butter, or you can drink the milk itself. Chickens provided eggs and although eating chickens was more common than eating cows, eggs were the main reason for raising chickens. Pork was the dominant meat product for Americans and people all over the world.
