@Cochise County to get double shipment of vaccines on Tues
Good morning, it’s Monday February 22th and this is The Herald Review’s Daily Chirp podcast. We’re bringing you a closer look at one of our top stories, along with other important things going on in our community.  Today - Cochise County should get a double shipment of COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday. And in other good news - Alicia Thompson, Cochise Health and Social Services director, said the county positive cases are still in decline. But first, a quick message from our sponsor. Before we begin, some local history. Apache Nitrogen Products began in 1920 as an American manufacturer of black-powder-based explosives for the mining industry. It occupies a historic location in Cochise County. The company was formed as a cooperative venture by large mines located throughout the Southwestern and northern Mexico. It was led by Charles Mills, a Harvard-educated mining engineer who moved to Bisbee in 1888 where he worked for the Copper Queen Mine.  NEW -- Today’s history is brought to you by Benson Hospital - they’re doing more than treating illnesses in Benson, they're building a healthier community. Benson Hospital is now collaborating with the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona to provide diaper assistance to families in need. For more information visit their website at bensonhospital.org. Now, our feature story.  Vaccination providers are going to have a busy week as they prepare to inoculate 7,400 people against COVID–19. The inclement weather interfered with vaccines being distributed to states, so unfortunately, the county did not receive the expected 4,000 doses. The shipment coming Tuesday will include 7,400 doses, which includes last week’s consignment plus another 3,400 for this week according to Alicia Thompson, Cochise Health and Social Services director.  It will go into the arms of those in Priority Phase 1B as well as those receiving their second dose. Priority Phase 1B includes: people 65 and up, law enforcement, detention and fire department personnel, education and child care workers and those in Phase 1A who did not already get a shot. Thompson told supervisors Ann English, Peggy Judd and Tom Crosby that people who were scheduled to receive the vaccine last week were notified and appointments are being rescheduled. Thompson was also happy to announce that county positive cases are still in decline. Martha Montano, CHSS epidemiologist, reported the county had an average of 24 each day over the past week.  Here she is at last week’s Covid-19 update: Montano also reported the main point of contact of COVID-19 was family members, friends and co-workers. The reduced case numbers have met two of three benchmarks the state set for returning to hybrid or in–person school.  So for now, Montano recommends schools continue virtual learning.Craig Janiszewski, Public Health Emergency Preparedness coordinator, said over 19,000 doses have been given. The county was awarded $1 million in grant funds to increase points of distribution, provide extra staffing for inoculations and prepare for a mobile effort to reach places in rural areas and underserved communities, though vaccine shipments will have to increase to meet that need. Now, Ote Allsup on how he got into wrestling, and what inspires him. Next, an upcoming event in our community that you should know about -- brought to you by our sponsors, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative. Tomorrow the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum will be having a fun, free online event called Drawing Desert Life. The interactive class is led by Jesus Garcia and will teach you how to draw desert life. You can sign up at desertmuseum.com - the event begins at noon, so get your supplies ready! Finally - we’d like to remember the life of Mitzi Kirmse. Mitzi had been plagued with cancer and kidney infection over the last two months. At times it appeared that she was getting better, but it turned for the worst in the last two weeks before she left us. To say she will be sorely missed is an understatement, but knowing she is now out of pain, out of worry and now in a perfect state, is consolation.
