@Cochise County scores more doses of vaccine than expected
Today - Cochise County scores more doses of vaccine than expected. Before we begin, some local history. In 2849 Mary Katherine Horony-Cummings was born in Hungary. Now, we know her as Big Nose Kate, a longtime companion and common-law wife of Old West gunfighter Doc Holliday. NEW -- Today’s history is brought to you by Benson Hospital. Benson Hospital’s comprehensive rehabilitation team strives to get you back on your feet and improve your lifestyle. Offering Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy. For more information visit bensonhospital.org or call 520-586-2262. Now, our feature story.  Cochise Health and Social Services director, Alicia Thompson, decided to answer a text from the Arizona Department of Health Services during a work session with the county Board of Supervisors Friday.  She was glad she did. The text was asking if the county would like additional vaccine doses next week along with the 3,400 she was already expecting. Last week, the county received 3,400 doses, but the state contacted her and asked if she could use another 2,000. Of course, she said she could. Through the partnership that the county health department has with local medical providers, the extra 2,000 doses were quickly taken up. On Thursday the 11th alone, 1,616 doses were given. Officials are working to engage the over-65 demographic, and efforts are paying off. As for when Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection officers would receive their vaccinations -- Judy Lund, county Emergency Services director, said she had no solid answer from the state. The veterans administration in Tucson was offering the shots there, but they are receiving only small allocations. For now, until more groups can receive the vaccine, Thompson discussed the importance of correctly wearing masks. She said that the most important thing you can do in wearing a mask is to make sure it fits tight across the face. She also discussed wearing two masks, such as a surgical mask and a cloth mask over it. In other good news, Craig Janiszewski, Public Health Emergency Preparedness coordinator, said the state website for vaccine registration has been improved, and continues to be improved based on feedback.
