Story : One of the Titan goddess – Rhea was the member of first titan’s generation; the daughter of the primordial divinities Gaea, the earth and Uranus, the sky. They had 6 sons and 6 daughters between them. Rhea was known as the mother of the Gods and her marriage to Cronus which lead to the birth of the new wave of Greek gods is befitting to the title. The name Rhea directly translates to ‘ a flowing stream’, indicating that her name represented the flow of menstrual blood and milk. Though the titans were frighteningly big in size, Rhea is depicted as a Goddess the size of a mortal. Uranus later imprisoned the Hecatoncheires and the Cyclopes, who were his children as well,  in Tartarus for the fear of being dethroned by his own children. This caused Gaea to plot against Uranus with her titan children. After Uranus was deposed, Cronus took over his father’s reign but it was prophesied that even he would face a similar fate and that he would be deposed by his own children. Cronus later took his own sister, Rhea as his wife and she bore him six children; Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Poseidon, Hades and Zeus.Fearing the same fate as his father, Cronus began swallowing his children one by one as soon as they were born.  An enraged Rhea who had already lost her 5 children, decided that she will not Cronus have Zeus, her youngest child. When Cronus came for Zeus, she tricked him by giving a rock wrapped in Zeus’ clothes.She took him to Crete where Zeus grew up in secrecy with the help of some Nymphs. Zeus helped free his siblings from Cronus and also freed the imprisoned Hecatoncheires and the Cyclopes, all who later fought under Zeus to overthrow Cronus and the other Titans in a battle which lasted for 10 year. It was the Titanomachy which finally brought the new era of Gods in the Greek mythology.
