हिन्दू ह्रदय सम्राट राजधिराज छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज की जय हो......... 10th Nov 1659. 358 years ago, on this day, Afzal Khan was eliminated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, his army was annihilated. Afzal Khan was a shrewd and a very mighty commander of Adilshahi. He turned many Maratha sardars and Deshmukhs against Shivaji as his clever policy of divide & conquer - either by force or by money. He was gaining success in his campaign- the deshmukhs of Bhor, became allies of Afzal Khan. Afzal Khan had played major role in arresting Shahaji (Shivaji's father) and killing Sambhaji (Shivaji's elder brother) by treachery. In 1639, Afzal Khan had murdered Raja Kasturi Ranga after inviting him for a meeting where he could safely make a submission. Therefore, Shivaji knew that Afzal Khan's word can never be trusted, he had no honour. Besides, Khan was desecrating holy Hindu places like Pandharpur and Tuljapur by razing the holy idols and temples. This was enraging the Maratha Empire. Afzal Khan kept trying his diplomatic ways to trick Shivaji and finally Shivaji decided to trick Khan in return. He proposed that he wants to meet and surrender to Adilshahi. Shivaji sent his envoy to Khan for negotiations. The spies revealed that Khan is going to betray his words yet again. Khan, confident that he's going to kill Shivaji this time, visited the surrender venue with his cavalry, infantry, canon artillery, musketeers, elephants, camels etc . On the other side Shivaji too brought his forces hidden in jungle closer to the camp. Date and time of meeting was set to be 10 November, they were to meet unarmed and unaccompanied by anyone inside a tent. Shivaji's soldiers hid around the meeting place and were instructed to kill everyone who tried to run towards Khan's camp. On the day of meeting, Shivaji hid a kataar and wore a waghnakh concealed under rings. The time for their meeting came. The envoys left them in the tent and there were only Khan and Shivaji - both of them had come prepared for treachery. They hugged each other, a normal gesture of greeting but then suddenly- the treacherous Khan swiftly drew his hidden dagger and stabbed Shivaji in the back. The dagger was deflected by Shivaji's hidden armor. Shivaji swiftly retaliated by disembowelling Khan with a single stroke of his waghnakha. Struggle ensued but Shivaji and his handful group of brave Marathas were able to escape back to safety - and not before chanting 'Har Har Mahadev' and neutralising 1500 soldiers of Afzal Khan. Khan's severed head was sent to Shivaji's mother, Jijaabaai who was stationed at Raajgad. This was a major turning point. What followed was a long campaign where battle after battle Shivaji regained the lost territory of Marathas.
