History's Who Yesterday's Nation's video: On This Day in 1859 was the Carrington Event

@On This Day in 1859 was the Carrington Event
The Carrington Event was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history—peaking on September 1 and 2, 1859. It produced a beautiful show of auroras around the world and caused sparking in telegraph stations. The geomagnetic storm was most likely triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun hitting Earth's magnetosphere. The day before, British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson observed a solar flare—the first records of such an event. If a storm of this magnitude occurred today, it would cause widespread electrical disruptions and blackouts lasting for days or weeks.
