History Gone Wilder | Have History Will Travel's video: Sherman Returns to Dixie
@Sherman Returns to Dixie
A train screeched to a halt as it entered the Atlanta Depot Station, aboard was William T. Sherman. However, the year was not 1864, it was 1879. The aged Sherman had been the general-in-chief of the United States Army for ten years and now returned to the South. As general-in-chief he needed to be in Washington D.C. interacting with the Secretary of War and the President, but he hated living in the capitol with all of the politicos rambling about. He much preferred to visit the troops. Since most of the troops in the army were stationed in the West, he made frequent trips there to bask in the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers and live that Spartan like lifestyle away from the politics they drove him crazy. But this trip was different he was returning to the land that made him famous, the land that he quote, made howl.
