Wrong! Hey guys this is Tom from Travel Unravelled the place where we uncover the weirdest corners of travel and I'm here to reveal the Top 7 things that you didn't know about Tenerife. But before I do make sure to hit subscribe and notification bell for more weird travel content every single month. Trust me, it'll be a Tenerific time. Did you know that Tenerife shares the same flag as Scotland? This is because they also share the same Patron Saint, St Andrew. But I do hope he packed some sunscreen because that is quite the climate change. What came first the bird or the island? Well in this case it’s the island and the canary bird was named after our favourite holiday destination. Bonus fact? Tenerife is an amazing place for birdwatching. Expect to see buzzards, swifts, and even several species of chiffchaff. Tenerife is no featherweight. In fact famous plinth enthusiast Admiral Nelson tried to invade the islands back in 1797. My idea was that he sort of appeared there and then you put a rocket effect and he flies off screen. (You’ll have to put that in your brief.) I will put that in the brief. In fact famous plinth enthusiast Admiral Nelson tried to invade the island back in 1797. But despite his reputation he was defeated within 3 days, and lost an arm for his trouble. Tenerife was the first Spanish region to ban bullfighting all the way back in 1991, with the last documented fight occuring in 1984. Good on you Tenerife, leave your bulls alone! The native regional sport is Lucha Canaria, or canarian wrestling. It’s really similar to sumo and takes place in a circle of sand called terrero. The aim of the game is to try and get the opponent to touch the ground with any body part other than the feet. Think you’d be up to it? It seems like us Brits have loved the Canary Islands for centuries - as William Shakespeare wrote about Tenerife not once but twice! Specifically in The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. It seems like this love was mutual as the Citizens of Tenerife gifted him with a barrel of Malmsey wine every month. Now I don’t know anything about Malmsey wine, but I do know you can get a great cocktail deal in Tenerife right now. Recommend Club Tramps. You heard it here first. That is an actual club in Tenerife, just saying. The giant volcano on Tenerife is called Mount Teide and it's so big, it casts the second largest - no it is the largest - the largest sea shadow in the world. And it just so happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site and it also happens to be the second most visited national park in the world. It really has everything. God bless you Teide. Have you got have you got any unusual stories from around the world? Have you ever visited Tenerife? Have you got a favourite sandwich? Let me know any of the above or anything else in the comments below. I would love to read them. And don't forget to subscribe, hit the notification bell, give us a comment, like, all that stuff it would really mean the world to me and I will see you next time. Keep it weird guys!
