Kecak Dance ULUWATU TEMPLE bali The temple (pura in Balinese) is built at the edge (ulu) of a 70 meter high cliff or rock (watu) projecting into the sea.[2][unreliable source] In folklore, this rock is said to be part of Dewi Danu's petrified barque.[1] Though a small temple was claimed to have existed earlier, the structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and it is said that he attained moksha here, an event called ngeluhur ("to go up") locally. This has resulted in the temple's epithet Luhur.[1 Bali is such a great island. I had the chance to explore it for two weeks, and couldn't believe the diversity. Kuta for parties, Sanur for resorts, Ubud for the spirit, and basically anywhere in the water for diving. We caught this performance of Kecak, and traditional Balinese dance and Uluwatu (or Monkey) Temple. Over the years, it's changed a bit. Now part theatre, part fire, and part culture... It's quite a fun show.
