Ancient time it was the capital of the Sena dynasty (Ballal Sen and Lakshman Sen), then It was a center of learning and philosophy in India and there is still now traditional Sanskrit schools, near about (1486–1533) the great Vaishnava saint Mahaprabhu Chaitanya Dev was born here, on Bhakti movement he was a big social reformer and main important role figure of Vaishnav Bhakti (devotion), actually he was the feeling fond devotee and lover of lord Krishna and Krishna is another form of Vaishnu, thus Vaishnu bhakti maked him Vaishnav which holy love makes flood to the entire Nabadwip people's mind, after that whole world drenched by his holy devotion and this place turned into an important baidik pilgrimage center of Vaishnavs & Of course for the Hindus in general worldwide. Many pilgrim and devotee people come here form different place who are from Gaudiya sect of Vaishnavism, on various occasion (utsav) like as Birthday festival of Shri Mahaprabhu Chaitanya dev on Phalguni Purnima, Sri Nabadwip mandala Parikrama, Dol yatra Ras purnima Gaura-purnima, this extraordinary person got so many name from people like as – Nitai Nityananda Gouranga Mahaprabhu Nimai etc. There are some controversy about how the name of this ancient historic place Navadwip is named, but Some experts says that it came from ‘’Nine island” many years ago there was nine island surrounding of this place and this was the last one (Ninth) of all nines island, in Bengali Ninth means ‘’Naba’’ and ‘’dwip’’ is island.
