Mother Goddess Devi Mohamaya also known as Sherawali mata, everyone knows Kolkata Kumortuli is famous and popular for pottery in West Bengal India, Kumartuli is the traditional place of ‘Kumar’ (potter) where there are many workshops for Hindu God and Goddess Image or Idol (Pratima or Thakur) making, which are made by skilled craftsmen (কারিগর) and artists with clay wood mud straw etc and so on, as if the beautiful statues are getting life with the touch of their hands, Kolkata city is the capital of West Bengal state of eastern India, It is located between Ahrietola and the Shobhabazaar which is beside the Ganges river (Ganga Nadi), it’s heard that a long time ago, some potters came from Krishnanagar to make the ‘Durga Thakur’ at Shobabazar's Rajbari, but these artisan or maker did not leave this place even after the `Murti’ (deity) was made, gradually they became the resident of this place and which is known today as Kumaratuli. This amazing awesome religious ritual or worship takes place in various states of India (in between September October month which is known as `Sarat Kal’ in Bengali) such as Orissa Assam Bihar Uttarakhand Uttar Pradesh Rajasthan Delhi Haryana Gujarat Andhra Pradesh Kerala Karnataka etc and the idols produced here are also export to other states, not only that, image is also exported from here to foreign countries such as Sweden Australia Malaysia Nigeria America Europe Africa Sri Lanka etc places, but these are made of `Shola’ that is light in weight and floating in the water, despite the changes of materials the beauty remains intact, there are orders for idols from different parts of the world, even fiberglass idols are being exported to abroad from this porter’s town, this worship festival is also practiced in neighbour country Bangladesh and Nepal. Murti is created not only in the city but also in the village in harmony with it and a view of that is shown in my video. Many families focus on this festive season associated with the fine craftsmanship. Many money transactions become from different types of business and trade, so many people earn extra income during this occasion. It’s why this festival is called it is a festival of financial opportunity and prosperity. Not only the statues of Mohishasur O Mordini Mother Durga are made to their studio, along with her four children, Ganesh Karthik Lakshi Swaraswati gets the look, the processes of manufacturing is - at first a bamboo and wooden structure is made, then it is shaped with straw like a human body by binding with frame, then it is coated with mud or Ganges soil, and after it is done, then the eyes mouths nose etc are drawn out by the paint brush and of course the decoration is done with the help of clothes ornament. They work tirelessly every day and night to build and decorate these statues, so these producers have a big social role in the festive time to our devotee society, of course you can say this is a most biggest and nice festival (utsav) of Bengali.
