Los videos fueron difundidos por Radio France Internacionale en su sitio persa de información. Según detallan, debían ser parte de un documental en el que trabajaba un realizador iraní, Hadi Baghbani, pero fueron halladas por los rebeldes tras una operación en un comando militar del régimen. La cadena árabe de noticias Al Jazeera, que también se hizo eco de estos videos, asegura que fueron hallados por la brigada de Daoud, un grupo rebelde con sede cerca de Idlib, en el noroeste de Siria, que combate contra el régimen junto con los soldados insurgentes del Ejército Libre de Siria.
