3 powerful diesels roar past! 1500km+ journey South to Adelaide. Train weight ~ 4,500 tons. Length ~1.8kms. Genesee and Wyoming Australia owns the standard gauge Darwin - Alice - Tarcoola line. Alice lies half way on the 3000km journey from Darwin to Adelaide. Tarcoola is where this N-S line joins the W-E transcontinental line from Perth to Adelaide. G&W has recently taken over FreightLink (Nov 11)- the company which used to operate the freight services. These services run 6 days a week. They often seem to pull out of Alice Springs station southbound just when traffic is at is busiest. It takes a long time for 60+++ freight cars to get over that crossing at very low speed!!!! The engines - first 2 are FQ class built by Clyde Engineering in Australia..... their GT46C model, 4200 ihp (3100kW), I think these were built at Port Augusta. The 3rd engine is an old General Motors unit.
