The Insurgency in the Maghreb and Sahel is traced to the Algerian Civil War, which was a conflict between FIS Loyalists and various other Islamists backed by Libya, Sudan and Iran against the Military Government that launched a coup in reaction to the successful election with FIS winning, while the Civil War was a slow but deadly insurgency, it brought way to Al-Qaeda's slow rise in the region, which would become important when the Civil War ended, an Insurgency continued and eventually spilled over into other nations, including Tunisia, Mauritania, Niger, Mali, Libya, and Morocco, this video also shows the deadly Boko Haram insurgency and it's spillover that began over growing sectarianism in Nigeria, partially instigated by Gaddafi's promotion of splitting Nigeria into two but also discontent towards what Boko Haram views as a apostate state.
