Hurstwic's video: Hurstwic Fire Festival: The Importance of the Door

In the Viking age, a go-to battle tactic was to burn down an opponent's longhouse. Much of the burning activities took place at the door, both for the attackers outside, and for the defenders inside. Hurstwic will hold a festival of experimental archaeology to scientifically test this battle tactic. Our testing has been on-going since 2023 to prepare for the festival. On July 5-7, 2024, we will hold a public festival at Eiríksstaðir in Iceland. Several Viking-age house structures will be built, instrumented with measurement apparatus, and then burned.
