In the Viking age, a go-to battle tactic was to burn down an opponent’s longhouse. Hurstwic will hold a festival of experimental archaeology to scientifically test this battle tactic. Several Viking-age house structures will be built, instrumented with measurement apparatus, and then burned in a public festival at Eiríksstaðir in Iceland on July 5-7, 2024.
