Too Many Squirrels's video: Nikki Calum - I Will Keep You Safe Colin Morgan - Island

WARNINGS: Contains plot spoilers if you haven't seen the film or read the book and controversial subject HD if only to see Colins cheekbones better :) I only recently bought Island (I know shame on me!!) and it was a really strange but powerful film. Nikki Black is a young woman tormented by the fact she was abandoned by her mother as a baby. Her life has been wretched, she suffers from deep periods of fear, has never known what it is to be loved and she blames it on the unseen face of her birth mother and vows to kill her. But when Nikki arrives on the Island, she discovers she has a brother, Calum, a lonely but content young man, living in his dream World of stories. He's not stupid, never stupid, but he needs protecting. As the story unfolds, dangerous secrets come out and Nikkis murderous rage reaches new levels but it never happens and instead she tries to take Calum from her mother as that would be more cruel to the witch, but they are hampered at every turn but in the end, it is because Nikki and Calum grew their own unique bond of sharing stories, that Calum went to any lengths to protect her and even though it was by accident, he kills his mother as she lashes out at Nikki. And ultimately it is Calum that helps Nikki to see what she really must do with her life...redeem herself because she sees that Calum is happy on the Island and for him to be taken away would destroy him so she promises, like in one of her favourite stories, one she told Calum on the Island about Firapple, that she will never leave him, she will come back one day and that she will take the blame, she will sacrifice herself for her brother because he has a life and Nikki is willing to jump for him. Its such a beautiful story but there are elements which are quite distressing and also themes of incest. But I highly recommend the film, it is quite bleak but incredibly well acted but I definitely suggest reading the book by Jane Rogers, it gives so much more insight into Nikki and some scenes in the film make more sense after reading the book.
