IIED's video: Defining housing justice: struggles from Bhuj India

@Defining housing justice: struggles from Bhuj, India
In Bhuj, India, people who have lived in informal settlements on railway land for decades are now facing homelessness. In 2021, Indian Railways began demolishing houses in Ramnagri, the largest informal settlement in Bhuj. In this video, residents describe how they mobilised to stop the demolition, but still live under the constant threat of eviction. The legal situation is complex and there appears to be little hope of being rehoused. This video was produced by Hunnarshala, a foundation based in Bhuj that began its work after the 2001 earthquake working with communities on the reconstruction process. It now works closely with communities offering knowledge and skills for building designs, settlement planning, social housing and disaster reconstruction. This is part of a number of short films produced for a series of housing justice exchanges convened by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Aditya Singh and Aishwarya Gupta represented Hunnarshala in these exchanges.
