IIED's video: Insurance for human-wildlife conflict: a new approach

Nature and wildlife are what makes many countries so special. And animals in a thriving environment are also vital to the economy and to people's livelihoods. But as population numbers increase and agricultural land expands, how can people and wildlife exist together? Human-wildlife conflict is increasing - and resulting in damage to buildings and crops, and injury and deaths to both humans and animals such as elephants. This short film shows how private insurance can help with a scheme that covers the cost of farmers' losses, while allowing elephants and other animals to seek what they need to survive. And pilot projects are under way in Kenya and Sri Lanka with communities, conservation organisations, the government and insurance companies working together to resolve the problem.
