Title: Hindi Language and Premchand Sahitya Abstract: The talk has two parts: The first part of the talk looks at Hindi language through its origin, structure, usage, and variants. The second part takes a look at Premchand and his literature. Munshi Premchand is considered उपन्यास सम्राट (Emperor of Novelists) of Hindi literature. His writings present a realistic yet engaging account of the social conditions and dominant social movements of pre-Independence India in an accessible language. Philosophically well ahead of his time, his writings have assumed a timeless appeal. Even today, a connoisseur's collection of Hindi literature cannot be complete without Premchand's books. In this discussion, we review some of Premchand's major works, and try to develop familiarity with his literary style, prominent themes and legacy.
