Imam Shamil of Dagestan was the Great Muslim Leader, Warrior and Scholar of the Caucasus mountains. Imam Shamil protected the Muslim community from the Russian imposition over the region for a quarter of a century. Imam Shamil, also known as the Lion of Dagestan and the Eagle of the Caucasus - was a profoundly spiritual religious guide and a deeply intellectual scholar who gained the respect and admiration of friends and foe at home and abroad. Towards the end of his legendary life, Imam Shamil travelled to Makkah and Madinah to perform the ceremonial Hajj pilgrimage, where he met with Emir Abdel—Qadir al-Jazairy and also attracted the attention of large crowds of pilgrims and non-pilgrims seeking to meet him during his stay. Eventually he died in Madinah a short time thereafter, he was buried besides the Prophet Muhammad’s mosque in Jannatul Baqi.
