In this video about the history of the Somali people you will learn about ancient Somali History, dating back to the old Stone-age period through to the Somali Ajuran Empire. Somali History is overlooked and understudied despite rich archaeological evidence of an early civilisation having developed in the horn of Africa whose people practiced an organised religious code known as ‘Eebe Waaq’ and fashioned weapons and tools made from flint and other resilient materials. The film also explains how Islam first entered the continent of Africa in the 7th century CE with the arrival of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ disciples who had arrived in the Horn of Africa seeking refuge with the Abyssinian kingdom of Aksum during the early days of Islam on the Arabian Peninsula, this voyage is also known as the ‘First Hijrah’ and marks the initial contact between local Somali tribes and the Arab migrants coming from Arabia. Remnants of this historic encounter are still visible in areas such as Saylac (Zeila) where an early mosque was built by the new arrivals to the area – the mosque is known as Masjid Qiblatayn and represents Somalia’s early exposure to Islam. Elsewhere in the region we also find Masjid Sahaba in Eritrea’s Massawa region, where the early companions of Prophet Muhammad are said to have built what is considered to have been the very first mosque in Africa shortly after their arrival on the continent having crossed the Red Sea from Arabia.
