Nizam al-Mulk (Abu Ali Hasan ibn Ali Tusi) was the Grand Vizier and advisor to the great Seljuk Sultans Alp-Arslan and Malik Shah. His vast educational programs revolutionized the world and cultivated such geniuses as Imam al-Ghazzali through the vast network of Nizamiyyah institutes of higher learning, funded and maintained by the Nizam himself. Nizam al-Mulk was criticized for his expenditure on scholarship and learning, which nearly matched the defense budget itself, prompting his sultan Alp Arslan to ask the following question: “Why are you doing this? Why are you spending the state coffers on developing scholarship?” To which the response from the Nizam was as follows: “You have an army in the day (soldiers). I'm giving you an army of the night (Scholars). These scholars are the army of the night. They are the army of the night. What they do in terms of reviving Scholarship, their Dhikr, their ‘Ibada - is what keeps your government in power.”
