Shehu Usman Dan Fodio was the great Muslim scholar, soldier and saint who established the great Sokoto Empire following the Fulani Wars. The Sokoto Empire is one of Africa’s mightiest empires in less than five years before ultimately retiring to a life of scholarship, seclusion and sagacious reflection - at the height of his military and political career. Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio is probably the most influential Islamic scholar in the history of African Islam. This film explores his origins and the formative years of this great African reformer and sage, his views on education and the empowerment of weaker members of Hausa society. His struggles, trials and tribulations are also discussed alongside an overview of the revolutionary ‘Fulani war’ which resulted in the creation of the Sokoto Empire and Caliphate.
