Café de Flore... the people, the fashion, the chatter, the stories, the gossip, the classic Left Bank scenes, the book readers, the romantic couples, the business meetings and animated groups of friends...This is where life is happening. Celebrities, locals, and tourists come and go, enjoying the palpable atmosphere of this legendary neighborhood establishment. The cafe would probably not exist if it wasn’t for the dozens of writers who passed through its doors, day after day, year after year. In the 1950s, french intellectuals used to come and stay there, talking about new philosophical ideas. Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir developed their philosophy of existentialism here. They were quickly joined by Albert Camus, Raymond Aron, Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The first floor of Le Flore, then, was composed almost entirely of existentialists silently installed to write their respective works. Sartre even had, it is said, a special line for his phone calls. At the end of the war, the place was transformed into the epicentre of Parisian artistic and intellectual life. Flore also has a strong affiliation with fashion, particularly Karl Lagerfeld who would read Vogue alone for hours at a downstairs table. The café has held shows for Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, and Paco Rabanne, and launched campaigns for Louis Vuitton and Longchamp. Flore has barely changed since the 1930s . Drinks are still served in signature white and green china that matches the distinctive signage out front.
