Due to the fact that the United States has clear separation of Church and State, it is difficult to know exactly how many Jews live in the country, but various surveys puts the number at roughly 6 million, which is 2% of the country’s total population. In New York, the state with the largest Jewish community in the US, 13% of the state’s population is Jewish. Forty percent of partners at leading law firms in New York and Washington, D.C. are Jewish. Thirty percent of the American Nobel Prize laureates in the sciences and 37% of all American Nobel Prize winners are Jewish. The US congress and senate are 10% Jewish despite the fact that just 2% of the US population is Jewish. According to a study done by the Pew institute that was published in 2013, 62% of Jews in the United States see their Jewish identity as their “ethnic culture” rather than as their religion. Just 15% of American Jews see their Judaism as a religion. The largest religious Jewish movement is the Reform Judaism and 35% of religious Jews in the United States consider themselves Reform. 18 percent consider themselves to be Conservative while just 10 percent consider themselves to be Orthodox, while the proportions are flipped in Israel. The most important fact, however, may be that 30 percent of American Jews do not feel that they belong to any of these groups.
