For the first time, South Korean-made intelligent transportation system (ITS) technology will be used to monitor and operate the 701-kilometer Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway.
The Korean ITS technology performs vehicle detection, traffic violation control, and surveillance, video incident detection, visual messaging service, drone-based route surveillance, lane control systems, tunnel management system, weigh in motion, speed, and lane enforcement, improving the safety of motorists and aiding in the prevention of accidents.
"In the event of a serious accident, a tunnel traffic management centre will be built up that will automatically close the entrance." Vehicles approaching the tunnel will be warned that it has been closed by an automatic system while they are still a safe distance away, according to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the nodal body in charge of the project.
"With the help of technology, the centralised system will be able to monitor traffic on highways through CCTV and acquire a real-time update of vehicular traffic, its speed, accidents, and weather in one place, assisting in the prevention of accidents." Drone cameras will also be deployed to monitor the motorway, according to an official.
The system is supported by South Korea's Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), and an agreement between the two governments will be finalised soon.
The eight-lane, 701-kilometer expressway runs across ten districts and is expected to reduce the time it takes to travel from Mumbai to Nagpur from 18 hours to eight hours.
The new expressway in Maharashtra begins in Shivmadka, a small village in the Hingna tehsil, 23 kilometres from Nagpur. It currently serves as the city's outer bypass.
The high-speed corridor, which stretches for 701 kilometres and has a top speed of 150 kilometres per hour, is being built at a cost of roughly Rs 55,000 crore.
