During the colonial era, trains on this track were run by Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) which operated across Central India. Strangely, when the railways was nationalied in 1952, this line was neglected. The tracks are still owned by the firm that laid them in the nineteenth century The train was run on a ZD-steam engine, built in 1921 in Manchester for more than 70 long years from 1923. The originial engine was withdrawn on April 15, 1994, and replaced with a diesel engine. Shakuntala Railways was set up by a private British firm called Killick-Nixon in 1910. The company started a joint venture with the colonial British government in India, and formed the Central Province Railway Company (CPRC). The narrow gauge line was built to carry cotton from Yavatmal to the main line to Mumbai (Bombay) from where it was shipped to Manchester in England. Eventually the line was used to ferry passengers. Surprisingly, the British company still receives more than 1 crore rupees from Indian Railways for running a train on its tracks.
