@IPAC: Arifana Kalam featuring Qurban Niazi
The Institute for Preservation of Arts & Culture (IPAC) and Kuch Khaas brought Islamabad its final concert for 2013: a night of mystical Sufi music. The concert showcased one of Pakistan's most popular Punjabi folk singers, Qurban Ali Niazi, associated with radio and television for the past 50 years. Along with his brother, the legendary Muhammad Tufail Niazi (late), he performed at the opening ceremony of Pakistan Television in Lahore (1964) with Layi beqadraan naal yaari, tey tutt gayi tarakk kar ke. With numerous awards and achievements for his works, Qurban Niazi is one of Pakistan's most cherished folk personalities. At this concert, Niazi performed along with Sajjad Ali on harmonium, Iqbal on tabla, Riaz on tumbi and Umair on ghara, with a special appearance by Kafi singer Nasreen Multani on supporting vocals. They presented popular Kafis by Amir Khusrau, Baba Bulleh Shah and Baba Farid Ganjshakar such as Man Kunto Maula, Farida Turriya Turriya Ja, Bhanwe Tu Jaan Na Jaanwe and Chaap Tilak, amongst others. Some classics were presented in new compositions, such as Tere Ishq Nachaya in Raga Megh, Mera Piya Ghar Aaya in Raga Pooriya, and a fresh take on Lal Meri Pat and Boli Murshid Wali Bol. Niazi also debuted his newest composition Mainu Rang De, based on kalaam written in devotion to Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
