IUCNNL's video: Nickel mining on Sulawesi and its effects on nature IUCN NL

@Nickel mining on Sulawesi and its effects on nature | IUCN NL
Indonesia is sitting on a gold mine: nickel is a key raw material for the batteries we are using for the energy transition. And the largest nickel reserves are in Indonesia. That's if you look at it with an economic lens, with a short term focus. If you look at Indonesia through an ecological lens, you see green gold, because the country’s remaining rain forests are bursting with biodiversity. Especially in Sulawesi, home to many plant and animal species that are found nowhere else. And that is precisely where the largest nickel reserves are located. Driving the energy transition with blinders on means being blind to the destruction of even more nature. And even if we wanted to, we don't have that luxury, because too much has already been lost. And it's coming back like a boomerang. How to make the transition to renewable energy a just transition? Because in a truly sustainable transition we also preserve our natural capital.
