The Alqueva dam was opened in 2002, is the largest lake in Western Europe (there are several largest in Russia and Ukraine), located on the Guadiana River in the Alentejo, Portugal, near the border with Spain. For nearly fifty years was paralyzed the construction of this reservoir, which has been a true agricultural revolution for the entire south of the country, as its objective, in addition to electricity production, irrigation is the transformation of the surrounding lands. Indeed, the dam shall take 110,000 ha of new irrigation and allows operation of a hydroelectric plant with capacity to produce 380 MW, an amount that can meet the electricity costs of a city of 180,000 inhabitants. It occupies an area of 250 square kilometers, 33 of which are in the territory of the province of Badajoz. Its storage capacity is 4,150 million cubic meters of water (amount equivalent to the supply requirements of Lisbon for 40 years). The length from the dam to the end of the reservoir is 83 km. Its maximum depth is 152 m. Its jagged coastline has a length of 1160 km, equivalent to the total amount of the Portuguese coastline. The height of the dam is 96 m, 458 m long and about 7 wide.
