Guest speaker Larry Tye joins us to discuss the complicated relationship of President Eisenhower with Joseph McCarthy. Eisenhower Presidential Library Director Dawn Hammatt will moderate the conversation with Tye. Larry Tye, author of Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy, got first and exclusive access to all of McCarthy's personal and professional papers. This collection was closed to researchers for more than 60 years due to donor restrictions. Based on his extensive research, Tye surmises President Eisenhower waited longer to bring down McCarthy than many of his advisors thought he should. This resulted in McCarthy ruining even more lives and further disrupting the operations of the Senate and the nation.
