Slavery is America’s original sin & believe it or not it’s incredibly difficult for most white Americans in this country to confront that realization. Systemic racism which is firmly ingrained in our society is in many ways an extension of slavery & continues to contribute to a system of white superiority & racial inequality in America today. Yet the vast majority of white Americans are unwilling to accept this as fact & often dismiss these racial issues as sins of the past which have no bearing on the present. They feel this way ‬because that's not something that they as white Americans have to or will ever have to deal with in their own personal lives & so they simply believe that it just isn't happening when in reality it just isn't happening to them. This is one of the reasons why anyone who speaks out against inequality is immediately demonized, farther validating an unwillingness to acknowledge the responsibilities that white people bare in our society in terms of race. We often talk about black people taking responsibility for their actions yet fail to see the irony. Racism is not just a black person's problem, all of us have to take responsibility in order to effect real significant change & forge a society that is fair & just for everyone.
