Some of these lost treasures are preserved in ice. It only takes a lot of digging and exploring to find that some secrets of the world come in icy surprises. 10. Viking sword Coming in at number 10 is something that was discovered in the mountains of a frigid country, Norway. On a cold chilly day in Norway, a group of reindeer hunters were having an average hunting day when they discovered something at high altitude. The discovery, a well-preserved sword believed to be more than 1000 years ago, would have belonged to a Viking, an old race that once ruled these parts. After the discovery, experts believed that there might be more other relics out there waiting to be found, but after much explorations, they came to realize that the Viking sword might be an isolated find. Although it's unclear how the sword got up there, the excessive cold and the standard of the iron kept this artifact undamaged. 9. An Island It's the 21st century, and it may seem like we've discovered every piece of land around the world with our exploration making us travel underwater and even out of our planet to see what else we can find. But with so much ice in the world, it's possible that some lands haven't been discovered yet by modern-day explorers and they are well preserved in cold temperatures. In fact, some islands around Greenland were only discovered recently. Between 1999 to 2004, a group of islands started to emerge in the Northwestern part of Greenland. Scientists blame global warming responsible for these discoveries because these islands became visible due to glaciers receding quickly and giving way to undiscovered hectares of land. As a result, maps had to be redrawn, so that the new pieces of land can be added. Which brings us to the question -if ice keeps on retreating, more lands will soon be discovered- Should we be excited or anxious? 8. A Forest What would you do if you saw an ancient frozen Forest come back to life? Err... Can a forest even come to life, you ask? Well, hold your horses. The story of this frozen forest is as real as it gets. It dates way back to 1,000 years ago when the Mendenhall glacier started advancing and covered up a forest in the gravel. This gravel shielded the forest to the extent the glacier was able to advance right on top of it. These days, due to several factors, the glacier is retreating and trees, most of which remain undamaged, are being uncovered. 7. An ancient plant There are always stories about animals evolving or going into extinction. Still, survival and extinction are not limited to animals only. There are also lots of plants that are no longer on earth today due to extinction. Luckily once in a while, Mother Nature sends her trusty ice to the rescue, and that's exactly what happened when in 2012, a group of Russian scientists were able to revive plants that have been frozen in Siberia. Decades ago, a squirrel burrowed a plant called plasticine in the soil. Whether it was saving for its next dinner or protecting the flower from the harsh sun, the squirrel burrowed the plant so deep that the cold soil acted as a freezer, preserving the flower for years. 6. Frozen treasure This one sounds like a chapter from the last harry potter book, but given that it was covered by the BBC and a host of other reputable news channels, there must be something there. It all began 2013 when an anonymous mount climber met some French law enforcement officers and turned over a small box full of 100 treasured jewels like rubies, emeralds and Sapphires worth about $300,000. He claimed he found it in the eyes of mouth blanc and after a few investigations, it was discovered that the box came from the air Indian flight that crashed on mount blanc in January 1966. 5. Life forms in a subglacial lake Life always finds a way. Lake Vostok is a gigantic subglacial lake discovered in Antarctica located under the East Antarctic ice sheet. For millions of years, The lake was sealed away under 13,100 feet of ice until Russian scientists drilled more than 12,000 feet of Antarctic ice to find the fully submerged lake sealed off for more than 20million years. A lake in ice sounds weird enough, but there's more. The lake had proof of living things on it, which needless to say, should be impossible in those harsh conditions.
