Twitter India’s offices were visited by a special cell of Delhi Police after a tweet by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra was flagged as ‘manipulated media’. A series of screenshots were shared by the BJP spokesperson and other leaders of the party, showing what they said was a ‘Congress Toolkit’ designed to defame the government of India. After the Congress party refuted these allegations and took up the matter with Twitter, the ‘manipulated media’ tag was placed on the tweet. A Delhi Police statement says they were a carrying out an enquiry into this matter, and that it appeared Twitter had some information which they needed to know. The hashtags and have been trending with divided opinions on this issue. Many on social media are calling this an intimidation tactic, while others say it’s just the law is taking its course. This comes as all major social media platforms in India including Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, and YouTube reach the end of the deadline to accept new rules brought in by the Indian government.
