Sangli is situated on the banks of river Krishna and houses many sugar factories. The district of Sangli is a recent creation, being made as late as in 1949. It was then known as South Satara and it has been renamed as Sangli since 1961. It is partly made up of a few talukas which once formed part of the old Satara District and partly of the States and jahagirs belonging to Patwardhans, and Dafles which came to be merged during the post-independence period. Kundal, the region around Sangli, was the capital of the Chalukyas. Kundal was an ancient village, around 1,600 years old. Kaundanyapur (its old name) was a part of Karnataka he city’s original name was Sahagalli—from the Marathi words saha (“six”) and galli (“lanes”) describing the early street plan—which was later shortened to Sangli. सांगली हे शहर पश्चिम महाराष्ट्रात (पश्चिम महाराष्ट्रातील प्रमुख शहर आहे) वसलेले आहे. सांगलीची इ.स.२००८ सालची लोकसंख्या५,०२,६९७ च्या आसपास आहे. हे शहर सांगली जिल्ह्याचे प्रशासकीय मुख्यालय आहे. ते कृष्णा नदीच्या काठावर वसलेले आहे. मुख्य भाषा मराठी असून कन्नड, हिंदी आणि इंग्रजी भाषाही येथे बोलल्या जातात. आद्य मराठी नाटककार विष्णुदास भावे यांची ही जन्मभूमी आहे. महाराष्ट्राच्या इतिहासात नाटक ह्या गोष्टीची सुरुवात सांगलीपासून झाली त्यामुळे सांगलीला "नाट्यपंढरी" ह्या नावानेही संबोधलं जातं. सांगलीच्या पटवर्धन संस्थानचे भव्य गणेश मंदिर पश्चिम महाराष्ट्रातील सुप्रसिद्ध मंदिर आहे. सांगली शहर हे पहिलवानांसाठीही प्रसिद्ध आहे. हिंदकेसरी मारुती माने याच मातीतले. कुस्तीगीरांचे शहर अशीही सांगलीची ओळख आहे. ह्या ठिकाणी भव्य कुस्ती स्पर्धांचे आयोजन करण्यात येतं. सांगली येथील हळद बाजारपेठ ही अशियातील सर्वात मोठी हळदीची बाजारपेठ मानली जाते.त्यामुळे सांगलीला हळदीची मोठी बाजारपेठ म्हणून ओळखले जाते. सांगली जिल्हा द्राक्षांच्या उत्पादनासाठीही प्रसिद्ध आहे. नुकतेच पलूस येथे द्राक्षांवर प्रक्रिया करणारे वाईन पार्कही सुरू झाले आहे.ऊस, डाळींब ही सुध्दा प्रमुख पिकं म्हणून मोठ्या प्रमाणात उत्पादित केली जातात. आशिया खंडातील प्रथम क्रमांकावर गणला गेलेला वसंतदादा शेतकरी सहकारी साखर कारखाना मोठ्या प्रमाणात साखर उत्पादनासाठी प्रसिद्ध आहे. भडंग(एक प्रकारचे चुरमुरे), वडा पाव आणि मिसळ पाव हे सांगलीकरांचे आवडते खाद्यपदार्थ आहेत.
