@IFTF Foresight Talk: Decolonizing Futures: Exploring Inclusive Futures Storytelling Methods
What does it look like to create an equitable futures practice, through a non-western lens? On Thursday, October 14, 2021, IFTF's Ilana Lipsett hosted a conversation with award-winning futurist and designer Pupul Bisht, who is pioneering the use of the Kaavad storytelling tradition of Rajasthan, India for developing transformative futures visions. Pupul will share examples from her work with youth, women, and communities in the Global South and Africa, including designing participatory games. Pupul Bisht is a multidisciplinary designer, futurist and the Winner of the Joseph Jaworski Next Generation Foresight Practitioners Award 2018. She founded the Decolonizing Futures Initiative in 2018— a global project that aims to engage marginalized communities in imagining their preferred futures. Recognized as a thought leader advocating for culturally inclusive practices in design and futures, Pupul has been invited to speak at prestigious global platforms such as the ESPAS Conference (Brussels), UNESCO Global Futures Literacy Design Forum (Paris), PRIMER Conference (NYC), SDNow Conference (Australia), and the Global Foresight Summit among many others. She also hosts panels on Future of Storytelling at the NABShow, hosted annually in Las Vegas by the National Association of Broadcasting, USA, discussing latest innovations in the field of media & entertainment and their impact on the world. She is the youngest founding member of Action Foresight’s ‘Global Swarm’— an internationally distributed team of futurists, reachers, and innovators. The group worked with NESTA on developing a guide on Participatory Futures as well as designing a game to imagine new ways to involve people in thinking about the future.
