International Study Center at JMU's video: The true story of studying in the USA James Madison University International Study Center

Media, Arts and Design major, Youssef came from Egypt to study at JMU. He explains how different it is to what he was told it would be like before he arrived. Youssef watched videos to help him get an idea of what the James Madison University campus would feel like if he came to study here. What they didn’t show him was just how beautiful it is in real life. He was struck by how different it is to campuses in Egypt too, from the style of the buildings to how big it is. But the main difference for Youssef was in the assignments and the way you’re assessed in the USA. Back home in Egypt, you only have to study for one week before your exam and that gives you your total grade. Here in the US, you have to work hard continuously. You’re given assignments and reading to keep on top of as well as final exams to study for. Youssef also explains that the negative image of people from the US isn’t his experience at all. He has found JMU to be a truly welcoming community, to all religions, ethnicities and races.
