My 26 rules in picking a briefcase: 1. Veg, tanned leather 2. Made in USA (preferred) 3. Not too heavy, bulky 4. Timeless design, no gimmick, techie stuff 5. Age well, weather well = look better with age 6. Every design, components serve a functional purpose 7. Stand up on its own, stay in form 8. Handmade (prefer by one man, or a small group of craftsman, not from an assembly line) 9. Design aesthetic: Flap is good as long as it's not too big 10. Color that will show its wear and tear well (=character) 11. Not too dressy; not too boardroom-like 12. Match well with business causal + starbucks causal 13. Size and dimension (no bigger than: 17 x 12 x 6) 14. Slim profile briefcase but no less than 3" inches deep 15. No front zipper visible (eyesore) 16. No huge company logo visible (eyesore) 17. Avoid briefcase with non-leather strap 18. Avoid company with no good warranty 19. Locking mechanism - no more than 10 secs to open and close 20. Avoid trendy material, color 21. Avoid briefcase with no internal compartments 22. Preferred briefcase with known leather origin 23. Avoid fixed strap 24. Avoid chrome tanned leather i.e saddlebeck 25. Avoid briefcase with no handle 26. Don't buy any briefcase with insufficient strap, shoulder support
