I encourage divers that want to buy their own. equipment to wait. Learn how to dive, determine how much you'll dive and make sure you're going to like it. Contrary to popular belief, equipment doesn't make you a better diver, lots of dives does. If you're going to travel, taking your own gear is not all it's cracked up to be. TSA thinks everything can be used as a weapon, so it's possible to get something confiscated. Try and rent different gear first from friends or shops to give you a variety of experiences to choose from. Whatever you do, be weary of equipment that someone tells you that you can grow into.
