Side kick or yoko geri can be a very challenging kick. There can be many reasons for this and most students put it down to poor flexibility. Sometimes it is poor flexibility but it can also be to do with general leg strength and supporting muscles like the lower back and the glute area. Here is a simple exercise that you can train at home, following this exercises will help with all of the previous mentioned and also help with balance and core.
