@Ann Curry interview, talks Determination & NEVER Giving Up pt. 1
Watch Part 2 Here: http://youtu.be/V-pP5s-Y6Os Ann believes Determination, more than anything else (talent, looks, intellect) determines success. She tells her story of growing up as a mixed-race child in a family that barely had enough money to live month to month. Ann Curry's father spent his entire career in the U.S. Navy. Her mother was the daughter of a japanese rice farmer. Growing up, Ann never attended the same school for more than 2 years due to her father being stationed to a new military base for his job in the Navy. Growing up as a mixed-race child, she often felt like she didn't belong, like she was outside the group. At a young age, her mother taught her the japanese word 'Gambaru' which means "Never Give Up". Later in life, Ann Curry said in an interview: "Gambaru is why a poor girl, from a family without any history of anyone going to college -- a mixed-race girl, no less; a girl growing up in a family where the mother barely spoke english correctly -- could rise and become someone who speaks in english to millions of people every day." To go to college, Ann had to pay for it herself. She got some small scholarships and worked workstudy jobs. She also worked as a maid scrubbing bathrooms in a hotel to earn tuition money to pay for her education. Ann Curry began her broadcast journalism career at Oregon's KTVL station. When she entered TV News, most of the reporters were white men. She was the television station's very first female news reporter. Ann recounts how when she was interviewing for the position, her boss told her that he didn't think she would be able to do it and that the camera was too heavy for her to carry, she might hurt herself. Ann simply replied "Just give me a chance" and the rest is history. An important lesson she shares in this interview: When someone says something to you that makes you feel like you are not good enough, don't blame the person, use it as motivation to try really hard to make it happen. Ann Curry Work History: 1990 - Joined NBC News as a Chicago based news correspondent 1992 - Named Anchor of 'NBC News At Sunrise' 1997 - Joined the 'Today Show' 2005 - Ann was named co-anchor of 'Dateline NBC' For more information: Ann Curry Twitter: @AnnCurry
