James David Patrick's video: The Shepherds Episode 1: The Spirit of Emory

This is my first video project that began during my junior year at Emory University in 1999. The Shepherds would make four episodes with a partially completed fifth episode that never aired due to our chaotic senior year schedules. Those sketches, unfortunately, have been lost to the ages. This, the very first episode, was a fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants improv session. We had outlines of scenes and places they needed to go, but we let Emory's improv talent get us there. This notion of sketch comedy is great for wasting footage and spending 1000 hours in the editing suite. Our short film that we conceptualized as a parody of the 'Blair Witch' parodies still feels rather successful -- even if you don't quite understand that we're also making fun of the fact that Emory had no school spirit and in place of that traditional aspect of college life, you had, well... you'll see how we replace it. Please enjoy the first entry of the Shepherds. I apologize for some of the video degradation that resulted from the repeated transfer of these episodes onto various digital formats. The DVD upon which this episode lived also started to deteriorate before I could upload it to Youtube. I tried to minimize the playback glitches but there was only so much I could do without paying to have the entire episode again transferred from the original master tape... which I'm sure I have around here somewhere.
