The following video is a good description of the second stage of jñāna yōga (Advaita Vedanta). It involves introspection, where I sincerely question my own intellect: Am I truly convinced? Convicted of what? That I am not merely the body or the mind, but rather the eternal consciousness functioning through them. Until this conviction arises within the student, the guru remains open to any amount of discussion. This process of interaction and resolution of doubts is known as mananam, constituting the crucial second aspect of jñāna yōga. Through mananam, I dismantle all intellectual barriers, transforming knowledge into firm conviction. No longer a vague hypothesis or notion, this truth becomes a concrete reality for me. Afterwards the third and final stage arrives when this intellectual understanding will be transformed into emotional strength and resilience. That's because our emotional self is the one that primarily engages in our daily relationships. When you study, sing a song or read a book you hardly get emotionally challenged. But when your coffee is delayed, the tardy bus comes late, your car fails to start, then you know who is active. We feel irked when someone overtakes our vehicle or when roadblocks hinder our journey to the office. Throughout the day, we find ourselves oscillating between emotions such as agitation, jealousy, depression, anxiety, anger, and irritation. Without strengthening our emotional resilience, our knowledge remains disconnected, and we continue to experience bitterness in our daily lives. Every moment is fraught with disturbance, irritation, fear, anger, frustration, and worry, perpetuating a cycle of emotional complexity, until you transform your intellectual understanding into true emotional strength!
