Every year in Germany, little elves add a magical touch to Köln's / Cologne’s Old Town with the city’s largest Christmas market and a spectacular ice rink. Here I am walking around the the two most visited markets. Heinzels Winter Fairytale offers a wide range of speciality items, handicrafts and Christmas gifts. Its over 100 stalls are split into different themed laneways and piazzas stretching across Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Set amongst the magical atmosphere of the Christmas market, its more than 100-m-long straights and circumnavigation of the imposing horseman statue are a source of ice-skating enjoyment for young and old. The rink always remains open well into January. From wood carvers to blacksmiths to confectioners – artisans from all over Europe are only too happy to showcase their skills in the artisan laneway (‘Handwerkergasse’) at Alter Markt. In the middle of Köln / Cologne, the Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral (Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom) awaits its visitors with a huge decorated Christmas tree at the foot of the impressive Cathedral. Every year, countless visitors to Köln in Germany are invited to stroll and browse through this market, sampling the selected handicrafts and organic culinary delicacies and enjoying a diverse Christmas stage programme featuring more than 100 free events.
