Archetypal Themes in Joker The new movie Joker in cinemas has become something of a social phenomena with lots of videos and news articles pouring out on Joaquin Phoenix's version of Joker in a new perspective of the Batman DC universe. In this video, I thought I'd analyse the archetypal themes in the movie Joker. The film followers the character Arthur Fleck who undergoes a process of becoming the Joker. Essentially, Joker is a film about the uprising of the archetypal shadow aspects that arise out of a response to deficits or weaknesses in the persona. The Joker is born when Arthur Fleck kills 3 men while on the subway and this is the beginnings of a very negative integration of the shadow as a form of self empowerment. The film turns away from the catch phrase 'don't forget to smile', which encapsulates the falseness of the persona, and turns toward the catch phrase 'don't smile' which is fitting for the archetypal shadow character embodied by the Joker. Besides the archetypal themes surrounding the shadow and the persona there are also archetypal themes that relate to the dichotomy between the masculine and feminine - the archetype of the father and the archetype of the mother. Arthur Fleck is also portrayed in the film as a struggling comedian who follows the creative artist motif of being misunderstood and rejected by society. This alludes to the archetype of the creative artist who tries to manifest their creative vision upon the world. If such an integration of creativity is unable to manifest personally or is rejected by society, such creative forces can rise up in the most destructive ways. We certainly see this happen as the Joker sets in motion a wave of riots that consume Gotham City. What did you think of the film Joker?
