Jean Claude Vanderfield Automatons & Metal Art's video: Steel dragon made from scrap objects talks and smokes

@Steel dragon made from scrap objects, talks and smokes
I made a couple owls that move when I first began, but years ago, this dragon automata was my real first effort at creating automata. My first real automaton creation, "Harley the Dragon", named after the Harley Davidson exhaust I used to make his tail and chest plates. (He's even got the Harley logo on his chest.) This piece stands almost 5 feet tall and has wings that spread themselves out to over 4 feet and move forward and backward. His face is a salvaged stainless bathtub spout with bicycle brake levers as the lower jaws. I custom fabricated a vape pen/fish aquarium air pump smoke generator that runs off a phone charger. The smoke travels up a rubber tube from the base when the timer is triggered by a switch on wooden cams, and it exits the nostrils and mouth. He has a microphone in his neck that let's you talk to the automaton, he uses an app called Sy to retrieve answers from the internet, using wireless access to a nearby capable pad or phone. Then he uses the onboard stereo sound system to reply with a deep English butler-style accent. He can also roar and you can ask him to play your favorite songs and he'll play them through his stereo speakers. The jaws and tongue move, neck and head move, wings extend and contract as well as flap forward and backward. Most of the outer shell is from scrap stainless serving dishes, farm implements, and motorcycle parts welded over rebar. Wires pull the moving parts, and connect to levers that are operated by wooden cams, powered by an old Lincoln power window motor that turns sewing machine gears. He runs a full cycle of movement and smoke for about 3 minutes and resets for 4 minutes. All I had at the time was a $24 pawn shop Harbor Freight welder that I had to fix regularly. I had a messy garage full of junk, so he's made of 100% scrap objects I had on hand. This was my first attempt at using the old master's ideas of cams to operate an automaton. Still amazed it worked with the crude assembly..lol. He's still a favorite of mine, but he flew up north long ago to his new lair!
