Le 9 avril 1916, le jour même de l’échec de l’offensive générale allemande sur le front de Verdun, une manifestation solennelle s’est tenue au Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne en soutien au peuple arménien victime du joug ottoman. Se succédèrent à la Tribune MM Paul Deschanel, Paul Painlevé, l’abbé Wetterlé et Anatole France, stigmatisant « le crime gigantesque commis par les Turcs et les Allemands en Arménie. » L’hymne national est exécuté, sous la direction de Vincent d’Indy avant l’intervention de Paul Deschanel.
