Prime Roy Jones Jr defends his IBF, WBA & WBC Light Heavyweight Titles against top rated Light Heavyweight contender David Telesco in the first fight card in the 68 year history of Radio City Music Hall before a sellout crowd of 5,923. At this juncture of his career, Captain Hook’s only loss took place in March 1997 where he was disqualified against Montell Griffin for hitting him twice when he was down and lost his WBC Light Heavyweight Title. However, he regained the title 5 months later via a devastating first round knockout in one of his most spectacular career performances. Prefight records; Jones 40(33)-1, Telesco 23(19)-2. Entering the fight, Telesco had defeated the likes of Frank Tate & Will Taylor while Jones had notable wins over Bernard Hopkins, Eric Lucas, Glen Wolfe, Jorge Fernando Castro, Jorge Vaca, Lou Del Valle, Otis Grant, James Toney, Merqui Sosa, Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, Thomas Tate, Thulani Malinga, Tony Thornton, Vinny Pazienza & Virgil Hill. Overall, David was dominated all the way and lost arguably every round as he was overwhelmed by the uncanny athleticism of a peak Roy who toyed and manhandled him despite having to throw mostly his right hand due to an injury suffered weeks before fight night. After 12 rounds, Jones was victorious via a lopsided UD12 with scores of 120-106 & 120-108 (2x). By CompuBox Punchstats, Roy outlanded David by 133 total punches and connected with 141 more power punches. In the post fight interview, Roy Jones Jr stated that he would’ve scored a stoppage if he wasn’t injured; "...because I fractured my left wrist in a motorcycle accident 3.5 weeks ago. Everybody said I should cancel the fight but I said, 'I can't. I've got a big date in New York.' If I had both hands, I would have knocked him out, but I only had one hand." David Telesco showed grit and tenacity through 36 minutes of action and had his moments especially on the ropes in a number of occasions where he manage to land successions of body blows on the champion. The gutsy challenger from Port Chester, New York also displayed unbelievable toughness as he absorbed the best shots dished out to him and despite being rocked a few times, he somehow managed to go the distance in his first and only world title opportunity. Interestingly, Jones turned 31 years old right after this victory as the fight ended just a little past midnight on his birthday on January 16th. Enjoy this highlight of yet another outstanding triumph by Captain Hook and remember to SUBSCRIBE! Thanks for watching and keep your punches coming.
