@Sergio Martínez vs Martin Murray - Highlights (AWESOME Fight)
ínez ínezvsmurray ínez ** NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED ** April 27th, 2013. Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez defends his WBC & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Titles against 6-1 betting underdog Martin Murray in Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina. This was the first fight for Martínez in his native country in over 11 years and Murray’s first fight outside of Europe. Martínez was the P4P Fighter according to The Ring Magazine while Murray was the ranked Middleweight contender by the same publication. Prefight records; Martínez 50(28)-2-2, Murray 25(11)-0-1. Entering the fight, the seasoned Martínez who was World Champion at Light Middleweight & Middleweight had notable wins over the likes of Adrian Stone, Alex Bunema, Darren Barker, Julio César Chávez Jr, Kelly Pavlik, Matthew Macklin, Paul Williams & Serhiy Dzinziruk. As a whole, it was a very close fight that probably could have gone either way as Martínez won nearly every round in the first half but Murray came back strong from round 7 on where he frequently connected with good right hands on the 38 year old champion who showed lapses in his defense and mobility due to troubled knees. In round 4, timeout was called by referee Massimo Barrovecchio for Martínez to recuperate from an unintentional punch below the belt line. In round 8, Murray scored a knockdown with a hard right hand to the chin to secure the only 2 point round of the fight. In round 10, Martínez was down for the second time but it was ruled a slip by Barrovecchio based on the fact that Murray’s left foot was stepping on Martínez’s left foot although it appeared that it was a clean right hand to the side of the head that put the champion on his butt. After 30 minutes of many close rounds, Martínez rallied hard in the last 6 minutes and did just enough to bag a UD12 victory to retain his WBC & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Championships. All 3 judges scored the bout 115-112 Quilmes born southpaw. This was the third time in which Maravilla Martínez came back from a knockdown to emerge victorious via UD12 in world title fights; the first time was against Kelly Pavlik in April 2010 where he was decked in round 7 but rebounded to outpoint Pavlik and the second time was against Julio César Chávez Jr in September 2012, where he was decked in round 12 after dominating the action for 33 minutes, but he rose to his feet and traded blows with Chávez until the final bell to secure the win. As for Martin Murray, he suffered the first setback of his career in 6 years but to his credit he put up a formidable effort and nearly dethroned the champion in his own backyard.
